Denver remembers the perfume Miss Bodwin gave to her and her mother during the Civil War. She stole Sethe's perfume, but the bottle broke in the winter when the perfume froze.
Denver has a secret spot in the woods where she can hide. She used to play house in there, then she hid from her brothers' fear, and now she just goes there to be there.
Leaving her hideaway, she walks back to the house. She sees Sethe praying. A white dress has its arm around Sethe. When Denver enters the house, the white dress is gone.
