Sethe and Paul D go upstairs to have sex. However, the sex is unsatisfying and they are both disappointed. Sethe's scars disgust Paul D. He thinks they are not like a tree at all because trees are inviting. He remembers meeting some of his fellow slaves under a tree at Sweet Home.
The fact that Paul D could not even wait to get undressed before he was done disgusts Sethe. She is angry with Paul D for casting the ghost out of the house. She thinks about Sweet Home and the men there, but she thinks that even Halle was nothing but a man. She thinks about how she and Baby Suggs had spent much of their lives.....
