Jewel and Anse discuss the fact that, somehow, Mr. Gillespie knows that Darl set fire to his barn. That means that they will have to send Darl to jail or Gillespie will sue them. Jewel and Anse decide to wait until they bury Addie, and then they will have Darl arrested.
When they enter Jefferson, the rest of the family wants to leave Cash at the doctor's house. However, Cash refuses to be left behind because he wants to be there for the burial. Instead, they only make one stop -- at a house where a "graphophone" (235) is playing music -- to borrow two spades.
Arriving at the cemetery, the Bundrens dig a grave and bury Addie. Soon after they finish, two men come to arrest Darl. Dewey Dell, outraged at Darl,.....
