Chapter 1 Summary

Shadow Moon is in prison for three years. He keeps himself busy by learning coin tricks during his sentence. His roommate is Low Key Lyesmith. Shadow misses his wife, Laura. He can't wait to get out and see her. A month before his release date, he meets with a man from the prison to talk about what he is going to do after he gets out. Shadow tells the man that his friend Robbie Burton will give him a job at Robbie's gym when he gets out. When he has a week left, he calls Laura and tells her something doesn't feel right, but he doesn't know what it is.

Two days before Shadow is to be released, he is called to the warden's office. The warden tells him he is going to be released him immediately because his wife has died. Shadow packs his things and leaves the prison....
