Chapter 1 Summary

Lieutenant Junior Grade Jacob Keyes and Dr. Halsey wake up from being in cryogenic tubes. The Lieutenant is on board with Dr. Halsey because the USNC requires at least one naval personnel to be on board a ship. Since Dr. Halsey is a civilian, the Lieutenant is accompanying her. Dr. Halsey tells the Lieutenant that their mission is to observe one six-year-old boy that might be of invaluable use to the USNC. The doctor also indicates she chose the Lieutenant for the mission because of an incident in his past where his superior made an error that killed and wounded all of his men, but the Lieutenant refused to testify against him. They prepare to land on Eridanus.
