Bean is a young man who has been genetically altered as an embryo by a man named Volescu. When Volescu's illegal "experiments" were about to be discovered, a one-year-old Bean hides in the tank of a toilet and escapes the fate of all his experimental siblings, who are destroyed. His genetic alterations leave him brilliant and able to survive on the streets of Rotterdam as a toddler and eventually lead him to Battle School, where he is not only the youngest child accepted but he scores higher than anyone in the history of Battle School. There he becomes part of Ender's Jeesh, though he differs from the others. Even though he is the smartest, he doesn't have the same driving ambition as the others.
