Chapters 11-13 Summary

Louis Vullion, the maddog, is upset when he learns about the arrest of Smithe. He reports to work but doesn't function very well since he is preoccupied about the Smithe arrest. While sitting in court, he listens to another case involving Heather Brown, whose real name is Gloria Ammundsen. He looks at her file when he finishes his case. After dinner, he cruises around the city and spots Heather Brown. He walks up to her and begins to talk. When they finish, he calls Lucas Davenport from a phone booth and tells him the police shouldn't have arrested Smithe. He won't know anything about the notes, and then recites the rules in the notes he has left. He hangs up before Lucas can say anything.

Lucas realizes the caller knows what is in the notes and that he has a Southwestern...
