Chapters 5-6 Summary

On Buka, Steven Koffler is worried about the men who want to steal supplies form the Japanese. They have not returned. He sends another radio transmission about Japanese planes headed for Guadalcanal.

In Washington, the newspaper has a story about Pickering's promotion to Brigadier General and appointment to head the Marine Corps Office of Management Analysis. His new uniforms arrive from Brooks Brothers and he tries them on, as Colonel Rickabee arrives at the suite. He gives Pickering the gun that he left behind when he left the hospital and also his orders, signed by Admiral Leahy. Pickering is to go wherever he needs to with full support.
