Summary

Chapters 19 and 20

Khalid hears the sounds of Ramadan. He hears men refusing food despite their hunger, praying. Khalid is too weak to care or join in. Khalid is struggling with genies which have begun calling his name. It started about the same time as he saw Masud again. He gets up and paces to remind his body to function. He becomes aware that he’s stopped in the middle of the floor, afraid that he is truly losing his mind. When a white space grows to envelope everything around him, he wets himself in fear. A black guard comes and comments on the stench of urine, asking Khalid why he hasn’t eaten. He tells Khalid he has to eat and says he’ll be back in ten minutes for his tray.
