Summary

Chapters 9 and 10

Khalid is awake throughout most of the night, and finally falls asleep. He wakes hours later and cries until the rough bristles on the mat bother him enough that he sits up. The door opens and two guards bring water and a thin slice of bread. After he eats, he is tightly cuffed again, and led out of the house to a waiting car where he sits between two guards. He is driven to an airport and hustled into a cargo plane with lines of other men. He looks for Masud, but doesn’t recognize him amongst the other prisoners. He is pushed down the aisle where he is crammed in with the others like a can of sardines. He realizes that he is going to Khandar, and leaving his family behind. He wonders if they’ll ever find him.
