Summary

Elias is again transported to the Waiting Place, which appears crisper and sharper, indicating he is closer to death. This time, Elias finds himself not in the forest, but near a rocky bluff. The Soul Catcher informs Elias that Keenan is the Nightbringer by gripping him and transferring the knowledge into his mind. As she does so, Elias realizes Keenan was the one who cut the rope between him and Laia in the desert and that his powers had allowed him to track down Laia and Elias in the first place.

The Soul Catcher further informs Elias that she and the Nightbringer once belonged to a group of powerful spirits called jinn, but are now the only two remaining. The Nightbringer seeks vengeance on humankind and wants to free the jinn who are trapped in the forest of the Waiting...
