Summary

Elias was stationed at Kauf Prison when he was a Mask, so he understands its operations, which helps him plan his attempt to rescue Darin. He pretends to be a guard whose uniform was torn up one by of the dogs guarding the prison, convincing another Aux guard to bring him a new uniform. He then blends in with other guards changing positions and successfully enters Kauf, while brooding on the thousands of Scholar prisoners trapped inside and the torture that is likely being inflicted on Darin. He also overhears guards discussing the Commandant’s plan to kill all the prisoners.

Most of the prison is freezing cold, but Elias also passes by burning furnaces that kill some prisoners. He almost runs into the Warden--the leader of the prison--which is risky because the Warden remembers his face from when Elias...
