Petra writes an article titled, "You Can't Fight an Epidemic With a Fence" under her pen name, Martel. The article is posted on the early warning network. This propaganda challenges Peter Wiggin to take action and live up to his title. It is aimed at provoking Alai into making a move. Now they must sit and wait to see if it brings about the desired results.
Alai and Virlomi sit side by side, but even with the semblance of equality, Virlomi is not happy. Today's meeting with the Muslims is important and they resent her presence.
