Chapter 54 Summary

On Wednesday, September 12, John is back in his apartment. He looks out over Ground Zero from his balcony. The time is 7:32 a.m., and he is thinking about the past twenty-four hours. He has returned to his apartment after looking for Kate all night and trying unsuccessfully to reach her on her cell phone. When he gets back to the apartment, he finds her sleeping on the couch. He lets her sleep and walks to the balcony. She walks out onto the balcony, and they hug each other and cry. They sit in the chairs out on the balcony and look out over smoke-filled Manhattan. Kate tells John that she put Jill on the elevator with the police and told her to go on up. John and Kate know that Jill, Dom, Ted Nash and all of the others are dead.
