Summary
In Part 1: Bird, Chapter 1, “Crystals,” Kyungha dreams that she is in the snowy woods surrounded by “black tree trunks” that resemble people (3). She wonders if it is a graveyard. Suddenly, the ground breaks through beneath her feet and the clearing fills with water.
Kyungha wakes from her dream about G—. These dreams started some summers ago when she was publishing her book about the massacre that occurred there. She has been obsessing over this connection in recent days, although she failed to recognize it when the dreams started. At the time, she had just moved into a flat alone. She felt constantly ill and did little other than lie on the floor, shower, or cry. Just remembering the part of the dream where bones rise from the water, made her shake with anxiety.
