Carlisle Summary

Edward takes Bella to Carlisle's office. Carlisle is there, but Edward says he just wants to show Bella some history. There is a painting of London in the 1650s, when Carlisle was a youth. Carlisle must leave for an appointment, but Edward explains that Carlisle tried to destroy himself when he discovers he is a vampire. He jumped from great heights and tried to drown himself. He even tried to starve himself, but a vampire is hard to kill. Carlisle was so hungry that when he saw a herd of deer he fed on one. He realized he did not have to be a human-eating monster. He swam to France, a detail that surprises Bella, but Edward assures her that vampires don't actually need to breathe.
