Summary

Chapter 13 opens at Reece's house in Coronado, California. He is having severe headaches. He wonders if he could have saved Lauren and Lucy if he had come straight home from the plane. He knows he would likely have died as well. He thinks death would be the easier option now but feels he was spared for a reason. He knows Boozer did not commit suicide because Boozer hated the gun that was in his lap at the scene. Boozer was not the kind of man who would commit suicide. Boozer's disdain for that particular gun makes Reece certain the scene was staged. Reece is not sure he can trust anyone, including his chain of command. He remembers having met a reporter in Afghanistan. He uses a neighbor's phone to call Katie Buranek. They agree to meet the next day.
