Things Are Not Always as They Seem
Things most definitely are not always as they seem in this novel. The novel begins by presenting the characters and relationships in one way and then by the end of the novel, most of what can be safely assumed at the beginning is proven false.
One of the first examples of this regards Addie’s relationship with Mr. Tuttle. No specific details are given as to the nature of their relationship at the outset of the novel, but seeing as how Addie is ostracized by her classmates and hated by Eve, and because Mr. Tuttle has lost his job because of her, it is implied that they had some sort of sexual relationship. In the end, this proves false. Mr. Tuttle did tutor Addie, drove her home at times, and had her at his house, but he never touched her...
