Addie's Clothes

Addie’s clothes at the beginning of the novel symbolize her status as the school year begins. It will be awhile before the author reveals what traumatic event happened to Addie the year before. The reader is shown, through Addie’s clothing, that whatever event it was that happened has traumatized her and made her into a school pariah. She wants to be noticed by nobody so nobody will give her a hard time. As her response to the trauma, she has chosen to disappear as much as possible.
