Chapter 12, Screen Language Summary

Dr. Mary Malone is trying to convince her colleague, Dr. Oliver Payne, that Lyra's extraordinary visit is true. She mentions that a policeman came around asking questions about Lyra and Will. Dr. Payne listens, but does not quite believe it and has had a job offer somewhere else. Sir Charles unexpectedly drops in for a visit. He offers to see what he can do and Dr. Malone is excited. Then Dr Payne asks Sir Charles what they would need to do, and Dr. Malone sees some kind of understanding pass between the two men. The catch is that Sir Charles will be in charge of the direction of the research. Dr. Malone objects, but Dr. Payne silences her. He also begins to backpedal on his upcoming move to Geneva. There is a catch, however. Sir Charles wants the experiments...
