Chapter 2, Among the Witches Summary

This chapter begins with the point of view of the witch Serafina Pekkala and gives an overview of events that closed out the previous book, The Golden Compass. Serafina is looking for Lyra. As she searches, she comes upon a witch's daemon separated form her witch because the witch has been captured by Mrs. Coulter and is being held prisoner on a ship. The captured witch was aligned with the child cutters, but not any longer. Serafina agrees to help the daemon. When she flies down to the boat where the witch is being held, one of the sailors assumes she is an allied witch, so she can move safely about the boat at first without being discovered. Serafina guides the boat to land as per the sailor's orders.
