Scarlett "Letty" Carnahan

Letty is the main character of this novel. She is Tanya's sister and Maya's aunt. Letty is intelligent, capable, and determined. Most readers will like her, though she has some faults. She tends to be buffeted by circumstances and is often incapable of making thoughtful decisions. For example, when she finds Tanya's body, Letty's first instinct is to take Maya and run to keep Maya away from Evan. She is acting based mainly on what Tanya asked her to do. This action makes Letty look guilty, and the FBI might have seen her as a legitimate suspect except that Evan was already a suspect in a racketeering case. After Declan takes Maya, Letty begins to see the benefit of taking control of her situation. From that point, she does make proactive decisions, which might make readers like her more.
