Summary

Part One, Chapters Four and Five

In Chapter Four, the first stages of Dennis and Jules’ relationship is described. They met at a party at the home of Isador Topfeldt, a mutual friend. Jules learns of Dennis’ nervous breakdown and depression from Isador after he leaves the party. Dennis and Jules end up meeting again on the street some time later. They go to the copy store where Isador works and learn that her coworker has died of cancer. Something about the experience draws the two together, and they hurry back to Dennis’ apartment where they make love.

Chapter Five describes Jules’ last day at camp in the summer of 1974. She feels like a different person from the Julie who came to the camp. Her mother and sister walk in as she is trying to bid farewell to Goodman...
