Grocery Store

Tegan works at a grocery store as the novel opens. This job meets her most basic financial needs and allows her access to cheap food, but it does not allow her to thrive. Chapter 1 opens as Tegan has just finished her shift.

Apartment Building

Tegan lives in an apartment building. Because there are broken lights in the parking lot and there is no elevator to higher floors, the building is shown to be far from luxurious. Tegan hopes to move out as the novel opens once she signs Simon’s agreement and receives the money from him.

Hank and Polly's Basement

Tegan is held captive in Hank and Polly’s basement. This is where much of the novel takes place. The basement has previously been used by Polly to nurse her dying mother, and as such, there are syringes, a hospital bed, and a wheelchair down there...
