Summary
Sadie, a young girl, arrives at Polly’s door wanting help. Polly makes dinner because Sadie’s father, Mitch, is not home to do so. Polly lets her in even though Polly’s father had told her not to do so. Polly does not think a girl Sadie’s age should be walking the half mile from the bus stop. Polly offered to drive Sadie home from the bus once, but Mitch would not let her. Polly and Sadie make beef stew. She tells the girl to run water while cutting onions to stop her eyes from watering, a lesson she learned from her own mother. Polly hears on the news that a snow storm is coming.
