Summary
In the Prologue, an unnamed person who believes they are a good person insists that they have never before killed anyone. The victim dies as the murderer is shocked, believing this is the only choice he or she had.
In Part 1: One Week Before the Crash, Chapter 1, an eight-month-pregnant Tegan can see a man by the door to her apartment building at night after work. She takes out her pepper spray and groceries, and she realizes that she knows the man by the building, Jackson Bruckner, who is neither her boyfriend nor the baby’s father. Jackson is a lawyer. She thinks about how she will be wealthy soon.
Tegan, in Chapter 2, does not have money to pay her bills. Mrs. Walden, a neighbor, tells Tegan that it would be disrespectful to her neighbors to remain living...
