Tegan
Tegan is the protagonist of the novel, and half of the novel is written from her point of view. One of Tegan’s primary characteristics is her ability to empathize. She empathizes greatly with Polly who she believes is being abused by Hank. She believes that Hank is responsible for her own captivity, not Polly. Because of this, she tries to be kind to Polly. Tegan does not always succeed as at one point she stabs Polly with a fork, and she threatens to stab her. Still, she generally shows a lot of empathy and compassion for Polly because she believes the woman is being hurt. Even though she eventually discovers all that Polly did, she does not turn the woman into the police because she knows that despite their kidnapping, Polly and Hank saved her and her baby’s life.
