Summary
Dennis shows up and tells Polly that Tegan would do whatever necessary to survive. She asks him inside for coffee and she hopes Tegan does not make any noise. He tells her that he blames himself for what happened because he should have driven to her instead of the other way around. Polly tells Dennis believes “It’s the key to happiness” (210). She goes to check on Tegan and discovers the fire.
It takes a couple of attempts, but Tegan is able to start a fire in Chapter 44. Polly puts it out, and Tegan tells her that she just wanted the alarm to go off. Polly accuses her of stupidity and of endangering herself and her baby as she tells her there is no fire alarm in the basement.
