Tagg/Deyna

Deyna is the main character of the story. He is an otter who was born to parents living at Redwall, but who is kidnapped by the Juskarath, a band of vermin led by the stoat Sawney Rath, who believes Deyna is the Taggerung, a legendary warrior thought to be born once a generation in the clan. Deyna's father is killed during the kidnapping, and he is brought up without knowing about his true identity.

Called Tagg by the Juskarath, Deyna grows into a fierce and feared warrior, skilled at the use of knife. Unlike the other vermin, however, he never kills those he fights. He uses his overwhelming strength and ability to scare and subdue them, but he never kills. Displeased at the mercy he has shown a disloyal clan member, Sawney one day orders Tagg to torture and kill the creature. Tagg refuses and runs away...
