Chapter Ten Summary

Stephanie awakes after a long night's sleep with no sign of Ramirez. The relief of being safe, along with the beautiful weather makes Stephanie sing in full voice. When Stephanie opens the curtains to let in the sunshine, she sees Lula tied to the fire escape. Naked and beaten bloody, Lula is unconscious. Stephanie goes out on to the fire escape and, although she cannot tell if Lula is alive, cuts the woman down and drags her inside the apartment. Stephanie calls the cops.

When the cops arrive, the scene turns even more chaotic. One cop tells Stephanie that she should shower to remove some of Lula's blood. Lula is attended to by paramedics and the only report on her condition is "she's alive". Lula is taken to the hospital. While the cops are still on the scene, Ramirez calls to...
