Chapter Five Summary

Stephanie calls in Ranger as reinforcement. Together, Stephanie and Ranger go to Morelli's apartment to snoop around. Stephanie, entranced by Ranger's reputation, asks if he's going to kick the door in. Ranger responds, "No way. You could break your foot doing that macho shit." Much to Stephanie's amazement and disappointment, Ranger opens Morelli's apartment door with a key from the apartment building super. Neither Ranger nor Stephanie finds any incriminating evidence, just a steamy message on the answering machine from a woman named Carmen. Stephanie, spotting the keys to Morelli's Jeep Cherokee, decides to "commandeer" it. Stephanie's next move is to visit The Step In, the bar where Carmen Sanchez works. The bar is closed down. It's another dead end.

In an effort to track down Morelli, Stephanie decides that the one person who would always know how to find him...
