Chapter Nine Summary

Stephanie returns to the office and collects a check from Connie. Taking only a small cut, Stephanie insists that Ranger get the rest of the reward from Dodd's capture.

Ramirez calls Stephanie's apartment and says that Stephanie will have to learn what happens when someone disrespects the champ. A woman comes on the line, screaming and begging for mercy from Ramirez. Stephanie hangs up the phone and refuses to answer when it rings again. Eventually, Stephanie rips the phone jack out of the wall.

Stephanie returns to Carmen Sanchez's apartment building to question more neighbors. Upon arriving, Stephanie notices that the apartment of one of the final witnesses has been burned. The tenant wasn't at home. No one else saw anything except a refrigeration truck behind the building on the night of the shooting.
