Chapter 6, The Water Month and Chapter 7, The Poem-Composing Month Summary

In Chapter 6, Jane does research on a hormone known as diethylstilbestrol or DES. This is a hormone that was used in cows in the fifties to promote growth. The drug was also given to pregnant women to help prevent miscarriages. When men began having similar symptoms to those that Purcell experienced, the FDA outlawed the use of the hormone in cows. Similarly, it is now known that DES caused defects of the sexual organs in female children born to women who took DES.
