Ruth L. Ozeki is a documentarian like her main character in her first novel. As a result, the authenticity of the main character is clear, leaving the reader with a sense of reality that flows through her fictional scenarios.

In the prologue, the Japanese crew has a great deal of trouble filming the American housewife for the first episode of My American Wife! However, the shot finally comes together and the cameraman gets a good shot of the American couple sharing an intimate moment.
