Chapter 9 Summary

In chapter nine, the following morning, Ruby realizes that Jamie isn't speaking to her. Cora says it's because he's disappointed in her actions but Cora seems more understanding about Ruby's motivations. She does, however, point out that a condition of Ruby staying with them is that she not use drugs or alcohol and warns that it can't happen again. Cora sys that Jamie doesn't understand people "like up" who run away and return drunk. Cora reveals that she feels guilty for having left Ruby behind. She says looking back at it, she could have rented an apartment and taken care of Ruby when she went away to college. Ruby says that's ridiculous because Cora was only eighteen.
