Chapter 2 Summary

In chapter two, Ruby returns to thoughts of her mother who always hated work and held a series of dead-end jobs paying little more than minimum wage. Just before she'd vanished, she had landed a job at Commercial Courier, a company that delivers luggage lost by the airlines. Ruby goes with her every night from the beginning of her mom's shift at five o'clock. Until her mom's disappearance was discovered, Ruby had continued to hold the job. Ruby says the short-term plans changed when she was taken into protective custody but her long-term plans have not.

Ruby arrives downstairs the following morning to find Jamie engrossed in a phone call. She sees he has a laptop open to a social networking site called UMe.com and is amazed when he gets dozens of pings, indicating new messages, while they're at the table. Cora...
