Part 4, Chapter 22 Summary

Jamie, Claire, and Fergus travel to Argentan to meet with the Duke of Sandringham as he utilizes Jamie's assistance in choosing broodmares from Louis's royal stud. Louis agreed to this as a gesture toward the English in letting the Duke buy horses. She asks Jamie if he has heard from Dougal, to which he says no. Claire didn't tell Jamie about Dougal's visit, because Dougal made her promise in exchange for his testimony against Randall with Claire.

As they ride, Jamie rubs Claire's tired and swollen feet and explains his reasoning for agreeing to wait a year to challenge Randall. Claire chose to stay with Jamie rather than return to Frank in her own time. Jamie feels that he doesn't have the right to make her actions of more consequence by doing more harm.
