A father influences his child's character. In Diamond Boy, Patson and Jamu are influenced by their fathers.

Joseph, Patson's father, respects education. He demonstrates how this is important to him when he continues to teach even though the money he is being paid in has no value at the time. He considers teaching to be his vocation. As such, he wants his children to be educated. For a while, his son, Patson, turns against these values.
