Summary

Part V: Grace begins as Patson is treated by a vet. Patson receives a message that Grace is trapped. Patson asks Boubacar why he has helped them so much. Boubacar explains how he had joined Reverend Lubango’s Army of Assurance and did horrible things while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. One horrible day, he and his comrades destroyed a village and everybody in it before he realized that it was his own village. When he found his dead relatives, he realized that “they looked no different from the other dead bodies” (323). He no longer believed he had anything to live for, so when he found Patson and Grace, they reminded him of him and his sister.
