Summary
Jamu tells Patson that in the syndicate, “People who trust each other work together. They protect one another and they all share the profits” (75). If anyone finds any ore, they are supposed to share it with everyone. The police take bribes, however. They do not stop illegal activities. Jamu fears both Musi and Uncle James. Patson laughs when Jamu tells him that Sylvia told them that she married a royal family. Joseph is the only son of a chief, but his complicated family history has kept them apart from his family. His family did not approve of the marriage to Patson’s poor mother. His mother died when Patson was ten, in a car accident.
