Summary
Boys play soccer, and Patson feels mocked by it because of Stumpy, his amputated leg. He writes in his diary about the hordes of people trying to leave the country. People lack money, food, and freedom while South Africa has all of those. Boubacar says that money is needed to get across the border, and Patson thinks about how his diamonds never really got him anywhere. Grace left for South Africa with Determine, Patson wishes he had left with Grace the last time he saw her.
Patson watches as the kids choose teams for their game. He knows that people only see his stump, not him. Patson decides to join the game, telling his pain to stop. He is told to protect the goal, and a boy named Aziz is given a penalty shot. Patson is able to stop it and...
