Zimbabwe

The main characters are all from Zimbabwe. The situation in the country is difficult because of the diamonds that have been found there. People from all over come to find riches, and these people are often taken advantage of by those with power.

South Africa

South Africa is where the main characters head to get to safety. Patson believes that once they get there, they will be safe from the commander, but the commander is there looking for him. Ultimately the commander finds him in the hospital, but he is soon arrested.

Diamond Mines

Patson, Joseph, and the others work in Uncle James’s diamond mine. Joseph is forced to do this when his new teaching job falls through, but Patson is excited to seek riches in this way. Ultimately Joseph loses his leg in a landmine after leaving the camp.
