Patson hears the voice of someone. He asks about the whereabouts of Grace and Jesus. He is told he must tell his story.
In Chapter 1, Grace wakes her brother, Patson, telling him that they are near the diamond fields in Marange. Their father, Joseph, has told him that journeys should always change a person’s life. Patson has known for some time that change would be coming to his family, and his father’s wife, Sylvia, is upset frequently, feeling shame for their situation. Sylvia wants to stop to use the bathroom, and the driver eventually capitulates and lets her out, worried because they are in a dangerous place. Patson sees something move in the grass, and he sees a boy who uses his fingers...
