Summary

Chapter 12 is from Clearsight's perspective. She and Listener are good friends by now. Listener is skeptical of Darkstalker, especially because she cannot read his mind. Listener continues to refuse to let Clearsight tell her anything about her own future. Listener leaves and Darkstalker says he has something to show Clearsight. Darkstalker's house is much larger than Clearsight's, and is higher up the canyon. Darkstalker reveals that he has put all his animus power in a scroll. Rather than performing magic himself, he can now write down any spell on the scroll to make it happen. He personally has no magic and says this will keep his soul safe. Clearsight can see that the happiest and most peaceful futures are brighter and the timelines in which Darkstalker lost himself in this power “were almost gone” (134).
