Maverick Malcolm Carter

Maverick is a 17-year-old Black boy who lives in an urban setting where gangs, drugs, and violence are prevalent. Maverick lives with his mother, Faye. His father, Adonis, is in prison. Maverick has a close relationship with his family despite the Adonis's absence. He is very close to his cousin Dre, who fills the role of an older brother. Maverick is a strong character but he is largely at the mercy of his surroundings. He is intelligent and likes to read, but his language reflects the speech patterns typical of the uneducated gang members. He accepts violence and drugs as a normal part of his everyday life. He has a skewed idea of honor and responsibility because of his association with the gangs. For example, when his cousin Dre is murdered, Maverick believes it is his responsibility to avenge Dre's death.
