Family

Family is an important theme in "Angel Fire East" as evidenced by the emphasis placed on familial ties throughout the novel. The women in the Freemark family, including Nest, are born with magic to aid the Word and they do so by helping Pick maintain the balance of magic in Sinnissippi Park. Additionally, Nest's mother was not strong enough to handle the magic, and it is implied that this is why she dies. Nest's father is a demon, and he is the one who bequeaths her Wraith, demon magic created as her protector. Nest was raised by her grandparents and her grandmother also possessed magic, as a Freemark woman. Unfortunately, her grandparents also died, and Nest frequently wishes for their advice and even visits their graves. Nest also laments the fact that her ex-husband left her and that she will never be a mother. John Ross is jealous...
