In chapter nine, the following morning, Ruby realizes that Jamie isn't speaking to her. Cora says it's because he's disappointed in her actions but Cora seems more understanding about Ruby's motivations. She does, however, point out that a condition of Ruby staying with them is that she not use drugs or alcohol and warns that it can't happen again.
