Prologue "The Dupont Man" Summary
The narrative begins in the men's washroom of the theatre at Dupont College. Hoyt is having an alcohol-induced surreal experience in which he sees himself. He admires himself in the mirror and receives affirmation from fellow fraternity member Vance. On the way back to their fraternity house, they pass through The Grove. The author steps back from the narrative momentarily to describe for the reader Dupont College. Dupont College is a famous, old school with a valued reputation. Graduates of Dupont College earn respect from those around them from being able to claim they are from Dupont College. Dupont is a highly planned university microcosm that exists in sharp contrast to the slums that surround it. The original planner constructed a highly planned environment that promoted a classic university atmosphere.
