Chapter 1 Summary

The book begins in New York, 2058, with the rainy night killing of New York's Prosecuting Attorney, Cicely Towers. PA Towers is discovered lying in the rain in one of the city's seediest neighborhoods, with her throat viciously slashed.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas finds herself hot on the trail of an elusive killer. As Eve views the body, she finds herself wondering about the victim and life. Then, the hardened cop takes over, and Eve orders the other officers to bag the body. Later, she sees pictures of Cicely's children, and is shocked to realize that even though she worked with PA Towers frequently, she knew nothing at all of the woman she was.
