Coast to Coast Walk

The Coast to Coast walk is symbolic of personal growth. The walk compels the characters to take physical action and to break out of their insular realities. The longer they walk, the more emotionally and psychologically open to change they feel. Over the course of the adventure, Marnie and Michael rediscover themselves via communion with the natural world and heartfelt conversation with each other.

Marnie's Photos

The photos on Marnie's phone are symbolic of stasis. At the novel's start, Marnie realizes that she has not photographed another human face in six years. The absence of people in her photographs reveals how trapped and immobilized she is by her isolation. She therefore sets the goal of taking new photos in the coming months so as to disrupt her static lifestyle.
